Job Title: Assistant or Associate Professor in African American Studies
Description
The African American Studies Program in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is seeking to fill two tenure-track positions at the assistant professor or associate professor level. Each appointment will be in both the African American Studies Program and in one of the following academic departments in the college, which will serve as the tenure home: anthropology, economics, history, philosophy and religious studies, political science, psychology, sociology.

Position 1 requires a scholar with a teaching and research emphasis on the African Diaspora/Black Atlantic world, broadly conceptualized, from any disciplinary perspective listed above. Position 2 requires a scholar with a teaching and research emphasis in other areas of specialization within African American Studies, again from any disciplinary perspective listed above. Successful candidates will have a Ph.D. in an appropriate discipline by the beginning date for the appointment (August 16, 2009), possess expertise in African American Studies, and demonstrate potential for mentoring African American students. Candidates for associate professor need a record establishing excellence in scholarship and teaching, and candidates for assistant professor need a record promising future excellence in scholarship and teaching.

The new faculty members will sustain an active program of scholarship in their area of specialization, teach courses in the program and in the tenure-home department, and function as mentors and role models for African American students.
